Youth walk against drugs 2007

Here are some pictures (more to come) from the annual "youth against drug walk," which SEVA participated in last year and this year as well.

Towards the end of the event, we did a gatka performance. The performance was really well received they cheered so much and afterwards children and teenagers came up to us asking to learn something about gatka and to look at our swords.

The preparation for the meal was relatively simple this time. We made something that is well liked by people from here, frito pies. We just had to cook the chile and the beans. The rest was just chopping. They were very popular at the event and we served every bit of food we prepared.

It's been a little while since the blog's been updated. The langar prep pictures were posted, but the pictures from the langar weren't posted. This is from a few months back.

In our continued efforts to reach out to the community and 'be known for our service,' we decided to serve another langar. There are not many areas in Española that are densely populated. We chose to serve a meal at the Santo Niño trailer park since it is one of the more densely populated areas, and since Prabhu Singh is a neighbor to the area. These are pictures from the Friday night and Saturday morning langar preparations. The langar was held on Saturday July 22nd.

Progress on Jujube (Ber) trees

The new school has not yet opened, but somebody has been watering the trees and also planted some Irises under the trees.
The tree at the Gurdwara is doing nice. This is Hari Singh with Manjit Singh who was visiting from California.

In the archives there are pictures of the jujube trees being planted. They came to us as 'bare root' trees and had no signs of growth when we planted them. Although we don't have pictures for some of the other trees, at different locations, all of them have shown signs of growth.

Española Healing Fair

Once a year we have a healing fair offering lots of different healing modalities to the local Española community. We at S.E.V.A wanted to highlight some of the other Seva that people in our Asharam do. We have acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, herbalists, sat nam rasayan and counselers. All the proceeds go to fund a healing arts building for the Miri Piri Academy.

Great American Clean-up Day

Saturday was the Great American clean-up Day. SEVA participated in the Española activities. We started by meeting at the Española plaza where we got some trash bags. Then we took the trash bags to the Yogi Bhajan memorial highway where we spent the morning picking up trash. The event started at 8:00 AM and we finished around 1:00 PM.

Good Friday Walk to Santuario De Chimayo

Every year on Good Friday (the Friday before Easter) the largest pilgramage in the USA takes place. The destination is the Santuario de Chimayo (Sanctuary of Chimayo). Most of the pilgrims belong to the Catholic faith, and come from around the state of New Mexico, however, every year brings participants from all over the world and from different backgrounds. For more than 20 years and possibly more than 30 years the Sikh community in Española has continued in the tradition of Langar and served pilgrims refreshments on their sacred walk.
This year S.E.V.A. played an important role in continuing this tradition and expanding upon it. This is an initial set of some of the photographs from that day, with more to come.

Siri Deva Singh (background) has been organizing this seva (service) for the last few years. With the help of Hari Singh (foreground) and Prabhu Singh (not pictured) he ensured that the serving began around 6:30 in the morning.

Initially gatorade, lemonade and fruit were served, but as more volunteers, such as Guru Jot Singh (second from right), Guru Terath Kaur (last on right) and Sita Kaur (taking photograph), arrived they brought with them some cereal and energy bars that had been donated.

There was a steady flow of walkers to serve.

Sometimes crowds would build around the tables.

Some would study what was being offered.

Others would just grab something and keep going.

Some people were content and didn't want anything, however, even those who declined often said "Thank you anyway". The concept of Cherdi Kalaa (ever-rising high spirits) was definitely felt by all. With the pilgrims...

The walk was around 13 miles and the pace was fast. The walkers didn't have the time to come to our tables, we had to go to them on the streets with the refreshments. We were really busy and didn't get the chance to take many photos.
One of Prabhu's coworkers told him an interesting story about the walk. When walkers spotted needles along the route (just one side of the road), police officers would come and pick them up. The needles filled half a bucket at the final destination. There's no question that this walk and other pro-active events to keep people off of drugs is needed here.

Prabhu Singh talking to Dennis Salazar who is a member of the Española City council. Prabhu has spoken to him before about community projects. After this encounter Dennis introduced Prabhu to the mayor of Española and to the head of the school board. The mayor informed Prabhu that his office maitains a list of volunteers. SEVA feels that it is important to maintain contacts with community and political leaders and hopes that these contacts will help us to serve the community more in the future.

One of the very sacred sites of Northern New Mexico is El Santuario de Chimayo. This is the site of the largest pilgrimage in the United States every Easter, which brings people from all over the Southwest on foot to this chapel. The SEVA team was very pleased to have the opportunity to plant two trees at this sacred site. After the trees were planted we asked Father Julio to lead a prayer for the trees. After that Father Julio stood with us as we said a Sikh Ardaas (prayer). As with the other locations we planted Jujube trees, which, after establishing their roots, are very hardy trees that flourish in the sun and with little water (perfect for the high desert climate in which we planted the trees). With the support of the community these trees will flourish and provide sweet fruit for the pilgrims of this holy site.

The Valdez park is probably the most popular park in Española it is the site of the Spaña Palooza event which SEVA participated in last year. Last year they handed out jujubes to people who really enjoyed them. This year they may be growing on this tree during the Spaña Palooza event in the fall.

SEVA ordered 8 trees to plant in and around Española. We received the trees last week and planted them this past weekend. The first tree to be planted was at the Gurdwara. We planted jujube trees which are also known as 'ber' trees in India.
They are tall bare-root trees. Here are the trees in the back of the truck with mulch, a couple shovels and a hoe.

Latest happenings

S.E.V.A. has been on a bit of a hiatus for several reasons. A new development is that our board is now five memebers and not six. S.E.V.A. would like to recognize Rion Lyle, who has moved, for serving on the board and we hope he does well in his future endeavors.
Three of the members of the board were in India for the month of December. However, the remaining members of S.E.V.A. assisted in providing meals at two separate functions, for which there may be future pictures here. Two more board members were travelling during January and then February. And a few situations requiring immediate attention have also kept us busy. Despite, we have individually participated in a few small scale seva projects in the last few months.
Last night we held our first meeting in a number of weeks in which we discussed several topics. We discussed future langar projects, including one scheduled for this month. We also discussed projects involving planting trees, which were ordered in the fall and will be available this month. We also discussed other future seva projects in which we will organize and participate.
It is our intention that we will update this blog with pictures from the larger events that we organize in the future.

Habitat for Humanity

This month's seva was with Habitat for Humanity. We went at 9:00AM on Saturday and helped with the current project.

S.E.V.A.'s first langar program

The Sikh Española Volunteer Association is committed to helping those who are need in our local community (Española and the surrounding areas) and to raising awareness about the Sikh community. In the spirit of the Sikh tradition of Langar (community kitchen) in which all people share a meal together regardless of religion, race, culture, gender, or social standing, the Sikh Española Volunteer Association worked to prepare a meal to share with the local community. We teamed up with Interfaith L.E.A.P. (Leadership Empowerment for All People) to hold a meal at the John Hyson Family Resource Center in Chimayó. This meal was the first of its kind.
A group of Sikhs worked at the Gurdwara's kitchen starting on Friday evening to prepare the meal. We chopped vegetables and cooked beans. The next morning, Saturday October 29th, volunteers got together to finish preparing the meal. We made enchiladas (Mexican/Spanish casserole), beans (frijoles), and Spanish rice. After the meal was prepared we loaded the food into several cars and said a prayer for the success of the meal.
At the John Hyson center S.E.V.A. served meals for a couple hours. We encountered a smaller number of people than we were expecting. When we packed up there was still plenty of food left. A few of the volunteers then took the majority of the extra food to the Santuario de Chimayó, a local church that is very well-known and has many visitors and pilgrims on any day of the week. After a few hours at this location much of the food was distributed and the day was complete.
We our pleased with the process and result of our first endeavor to serve a community meal. S.E.V.A. looks forward to continuing with our resolve to help the local community and to serve meals in the spirit of the Sikh tradition.

This is to be done through frequent involvement in activities for the betterment of the local community and the hosting of service and awareness events. S.E.V.A. is guided by the principles of selfless-service, honesty, discipline and meditation.

The Sikh Española Volunteer Association (SEVA) is an organization of Sikhs who wish to do seva (selfless service) in and around the Española area. We began as a group of Sikhs discussing the idea of hosting an event to serve the local community with the idea to also raise the awareness of Sikhs. Upon meeting as a formal group we decided upon participating in monthly service opportunities as well. We started with a board of 6 members: Deva Singh, Gurujot Singh, Hari Singh, Prabhu Singh, Rion, and Sita Kaur. We are still in the early stages of our organization and are looking forward to a great future of service and awareness.
